grades. Free Dental Service is also provided to eligible

Exclusions from school
Each child enrolling at school for the first time is now
required to present an immunization certificate for
school entry (obtainable from the Health Department of
the Whitehorse Council) this is to help prevent the
outbreak of infectious diseases. Parents must obtain
this record from the local council. Children who have
not been immunized must be excluded for thirteen days
(from the first day of the appearance of rash) during
outbreaks of measles.
A sick child's place is at
home. The school is not able to handle illnesses. Some
common diseases are listed below with the appropriate
details of absence required.
|
Chicken Pox |
At least seven days after the beginning of the
illness until the last lesion is healed. |
|
Viral Hepatitis |
Until a medical certificate is produced. |
|
Measles |
Seven days or a medical certificate. |
|
Mumps |
Fourteen days. |
|
Rubella |
Ten days after the appearance of the rash. |
|
Scarlet Fever |
Until a medical certificate is produced. |
|
Whooping Cough |
Four weeks or medical certificate. |
|
Ringworm |
Until a medical certificate is produced.
|
|
Impetigo |
Until the child is receiving treatment. |
If your child is ill
please keep them home. Your child will recover much
faster at home and be able to return to school refreshed
and ready for learning.
If your child does become ill
during the school day, they will be taken to the school
sick bay. At this time you will be contacted to come
and take your child home. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
that we have an emergency contact number. If we cannot
contact you personally, we require an alternative person
you nominate, who is able to collect your child in your
absence.
If you have shared custody, you need to notify us in
writing of the arrangements to be made if your child
becomes ill during the day. PLEASE do not send your
child to school if they are unwell. We do not have the
facilities or personnel to cope with sick children.
When you arrive to collect your sick child, please go to
the office and sign the early dismissal book before
taking your child home. The sick bay is in the senior
building next to the office.
Head lice are tiny unwelcome
insects, which enjoy living in people's hair. Head lice
rapidly spread from person to person and for this reason
we urge you to check your child's hair on a weekly
basis.
If you find lice in your child's hair, you must treat
them and eradicate the live lice before your child can
return to school.

CONDITIONER AND COMB TREATMENT
(Strongly recommended by all the web sites we
visited)
1.
Apply conditioner
to DRY hair, covering from root to tip with
conditioner
2.
Detangle the hair
using an ordinary comb
3.
Immediately comb
the hair with a fine tooth comb (metal combs with
long rounded teeth such as the KP24 or Licemeister
combs are far more effective than plastic combs)
4.
Wipe the
conditioner off the comb onto a tissue and look for
lice and eggs
5.
Repeat combing for
EVERY part of the head 5 times
6.
Examine the comb
for lice and eggs |

Healthy Living
Our new
'Healthy Eating Schools' Action Plan is being developed
with the assistance of Nutrition Australia.
Children are able to snack on brain food at 10.00 and
water is available through out the day.
We
ask you to assist us by minimizing processed and
packaged foods in children’s snacks and lunches, for
overall wholesome food with nutritional value.
Please encourage habits of
cleanliness. Hair, teeth and nails are obvious areas of
care. They are important not only for hygiene but also
for the self esteem of your child and the relationships
they form with others.

Some children attending
school need medication to manage illnesses such as
asthma. Before medication can be given, parents need to
consult with the grade teacher and then assist the
teacher by supplying medication in a container which
states the name of the child, the dose, and the time the
medication is to be given. Parents also need to give
written authority for staff to administer
medication. Children who have asthma require an asthma
management plan. Please obtain a form from the office.
To avoid confusion, and for safety
reasons, medication
should be clearly labelled, otherwise for safety reasons
it will not be administered.

Parking
Parents, please observe
the parking restriction signs at the front of the
school. Particularly note that you cannot pick up or
drop off children on the school side of Molbray Street.

The School Medical Service visits the school to check on
the vision and hearing of all first year at school
children and to review children from previous
visits. Parents of the
children to be examined will be advised and permission
sought before any examination takes place.

Student records
The need to have up to date
information about your child is of paramount importance.
This is particularly the case in an emergency.
Student
records will be sent home at the start of each year and
need to be returned promptly. If during the year there
are any changes to information given
initially, (name, address, phone numbers, emergency
contact numbers etc.) please notify the school of these
changes immediately.

The danger period for UV is between 10.00am and 2.00pm
(11.00am and 3.00pm daylight saving time) when damage to
children's skin can occur in as little as ten minutes.
Children are asked to bring a hat and sunscreen to
school to leave in their tub or bag so they are
available for use at any time.
It is part of our school policy that all students must
wear hats when outdoors during term one and term four.
Please ensure that your child has a school hat.
