Kerrimuir prides itself on our work towards becoming
increasingly sustainable. Over the last year or so, we have
committed to the following:
$15,000 was spent on 2 large water tanks to flush the children’s
toilets
Using our older water tank to water our vegetable garden and
keep our chickens watered (we are going to be building this
‘green’ space at Kerrimuir in Term 3, 2009)
$50,000 worth of solar panels to support lessening green house
gasses; we are currently working on collecting data on our use
of electricity for the students to follow our progress
Our Bokashi Bucket collects staff and children’s food scraps to
create an excellent liquid fertilizer (soon to be used on our
vegetable garden)
Friday Fruit happens everyday for Kerrimuir children and we
collect the scraps to add to our BB
The large black bins near the Library collect old fluorescent
tubes for recycling
The gardens adjacent to Molbray Street have been replanted with
Australian natives – many thanks to the Parent Gardening group
for this superb work
Each class studies ‘Sustainability’ over a two year period –
Grades 5 and 6 will be focussing on this important area in Term
3, 2009
The teachers have attended two Professional Development sessions
with CERES to
ensure we are doing all we can to reduce, reuse and recycle!
Junior School Council put tubs under all the drink fountains to
collect the water for our gardens
We run a Rubbish Free Lunch Day every year – cutting down on
unnecessary cling film and paper products is important
We collect and send all our paper waste to the recycler each
term
We have been a part of
SWEP – Schools Water Efficiency Program which told us all we
needed to do was to add flow control valves. We did this in
April!
